People who are musically inclined generally have music collections in wide and diverse formats and in storage mediums ranging from gramophone records to optical drives.

Gramophone records, especially those made of polyvinyl chloride were the primary storage mediums used extensively. The present day however offers more efficient methods of storing music in digital form, in optical and magnetic disks. Moreover, the vinyl records of earlier days were more prone to warping and scratches, and hence lacked longevity. As a result, it is always better to convert your music collection from an analog sound medium to a digital storage medium. Moreover, digital stored music provides much more flexibility in editing and sound mixing, dedicated softwares are available for these tasks. However , converting these audio to more recent digital formats generally produce defective wave files. 'Wave Repair', developed by Clive Backam, specifically addresses these issues. It repairs common defects in vinyl recordings such as clicks and pops. It provides both automatic and manual de-clicking features. Manual de-clicking is usually recommended, however, dense defects may need some automatic de-clicking before subjecting to manual de-clicking further to prevent distortion. Besides, some common features like compression and volume control in wave files are also provided. The name 'Wave Repair' is a bit misnomer, as the software does not provide extensive editing features of wave files. It should mainly be used to restore wave files that were recorded from vinyl records.

Pros

  • Automatic de-clicking features
  • Direct to hard disk recording features
  • Compression and volume control in editing
  • Simple user interface

Cons

  • Advanced editing of wave files is not possible
  • Cost is high
